GB Electronics Case Study - Business Support Success

Coast to Capital Growth Hub helped GB Electonics to review its strategy, implement changes and help fund a crucial investment project.


GB Electronics (GBE) uses cutting edge design skills, technical innovation and clever functionality to design and manufacture products for the industrial, healthcare, consumer and life-science sectors. It breathes new life into its clients' ideas and pops up where least expected.


It worked with SweetDreamers to create ewan the dreamsheep®, the multi-award-winning baby sleep soother. It also designed and produced Gen-X1, the latest portable analogue synthesizer for the iconic Stylophone brand. Not to mention its BloodTrack® healthcare system. All just a small part of its growing portfolio.


GBE, which is family-run and has nearly 40 employees, also manufactures a range of complex industrial electronics equipment for testing, data logging and transfer.


To further control its manufacturing process, GBE recently acquired Wildtrax Electronics, the manufacturer of hi-tech custom-made circuit boards. This came with new challenges, which is where Coast to Capital entered the picture.


The Challenge

GB Electronics had grown by 20% in three years. In order to continue to expand, it needed to take control of WildTrax, its main supplier.


But after the acquisition, GBE had little left to invest. It needed capital to bring about increased productivity at WildTrax. And it also needed help to identify and implement changes to the WildTrax production process.


The Solution

Before Coast to Capital provided a grant, it insisted on a rigorous business plan which would show exactly how GBE would increase WildTrax's productivity and profitability.


Coast to Capital quickly got to grips with the industry standards. It analysed the crucial steps needed to properly measure productivity and then increase it.


Coast to Capital Growth Hubs Ryan Davies Account Manager conducted an in depth diagnostics, ensured GBE carried out in-depth competitor analysis, and helped develop online media marketing and commissioned a free energy audit for the WildTrax and the GBE sites.


The result of the Diagnostics led to the recruitment of a sales specialist'.


This support, the Business Growth Grant of £50,000, and the business plan which has been continually updated and is still in use today, is helping GBE achieve its productivity plan three years ahead of schedule.


The enhanced productivity means GBE can exploit new opportunities and markets. It has already created three new jobs and has laid the foundations to exceed its growth target of 40% increase in turnover within three years.


And it is set fair for the future, ready to push forward with its Industry 4.0 vision - the use of smart devices working together wirelessly to revolutionize production.
