The Greater South East Energy Hub is a collaboration of eleven Local Enterprise Partnerships (LEPs). These LEPs are working together to increase the number, scale and quality of local energy projects being delivered across the greater south east region of England.

Local authorities and Local Enterprise Partnerships have a vital role to play in coordinating, facilitating and delivering the transformation of our energy system. We are working with these partners to support local energy projects, from the development stages to investment readiness.

What is local energy?

Local energy refers to energy projects that are led by local organisations and located where the people who use the power live and work. This incorporates all collective action to purchase, manage and generate energy, and to use it more efficiently. Local energy supports growth in the local economy and provides job opportunities and social benefit. It provides power to homes, businesses and public buildings, and offers income-generating opportunities to all kinds of organisations.

Local action is needed to transform our current energy system and reduce carbon emissions. Such action will be carried out by residents, communities, businesses and the public sector. Local energy enables economies and communities to grow while limiting their impact on climate change.

What are Local Enterprise Partnerships?

Local Enterprise Partnerships (LEPs) are business-led partnerships between local authorities and the local private-sector business community. These partnerships are overseen by the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS). LEPs work to identify priorities and undertake activities in their locality, to improve infrastructure, and drive economic growth, job creation and the development of workforce skills.

In 2017 BEIS funded all Local Enterprise Partnerships to develop local energy strategies. There are six energy strategies that cover the greater south east region. These strategies provide the evidence to identify which local energy projects will bring most benefit to the region, and therefore which projects the Energy Hub should support.
